CHOOSING GODPARENTS: Baptizing a child is always a wonderful day in your family’s life and in the church's life. It is a day of celebration for the whole church. Your choice of godparents is a significant part of this sacramental preparation.
Being a godparent (sponsor) is not a prize for being a good person. It is not a reward granted to an individual. The role of godparent is a lifelong MINISTRY in the church. Your godparents are literally spokespersons for the whole church. By virtue of their own life in the church, they are people who can offer to you, parents, a sacred pledge that this church will stand by you as your child's first teacher of faith. By saying “yes” to the invitation to serve as godparent, one is accepting a sacred duty.
Because godparents stand in "proxy" of the whole church, the church has established a set of minimum criteria for a person to qualify as a Baptismal Sponsor.
- Must be actively participating in the life of the church, through weekly worship and faithful living.
- Must be fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist).
- If married, must be validly married in the church.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
Your choice for godparent will be asked to obtain a sponsor certificate from his or her own pastor. This signed document must be returned to the parish office before finalizing any dates for the celebration of Baptism.
If you have any questions about choosing a godparent, please contact the rectory to speak with Father Degagne prior to extending the invitation to a family member or friend.
